New Delhi: After making the practice of instant triple talaq,a cognizable offence, the Centre is going to oppose the practice of 'nikah halala' in the Supreme Court. The government has made its stand clear to the Apex court in this regard and will also support the petition filed by Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA).
A Constitution Bench of the top court will hear all the four petitions challenging the legal validity of nikah halala.Nikah halala prohibits a divorced couple from remarrying. However, if they decide to remarry then the woman needs to marry someone else, consummate her new marriage and then get divorced or widowed. Women activists have slammed this practice and have called it medieval and anti-women.
