Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, senior lawyer and former BJP leader Ram Jethmalani, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad's daughter Misa Bharti, Power Minister Piyush Goyal and senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram were today elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, senior lawyer and former BJP leader Ram Jethmalani, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad's daughter Misa Bharti, Power Minister Piyush Goyal and senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram were today elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha.

All Rajya Sabha nominees from Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra were elected unopposed.

While Jethmalani and Bharti came from Bihar, Prabhu came from Andhra, and Goyal and Chidambaram from Maharashtra.

The others from Bihar to make it to the Upper House are former JD(U) president Sharad Yadav, party leader RC Singh, and senior BJP leader Gopal Narain Singh.
Gopal Narain Singh's nomination had invited a lot of criticism since he is facing 28 criminal cases.

The term of five outgoing Rajya Sabha members from Bihar - Sharad Yadav, KC Tyagi, Pavan Kumar Varma, Gulam Rasool Balyawi and Ramchandra Prasad Singh - will expire in July.

From Andhra, the other leaders who made it to Rajya Sabha are Minister of State for Science and Technology Y Satyanarayana Chowdary, T G Venkatesh and V Vijaysai Reddy.

Prabhu is a BJP nominee supported by the ruling Telugu Desam Party. Chowdary and Venkatesh are TDP candidates, while Vijaysai is the lone opposition YSRC nominee.

Apart from Goyal and Chidambaram, the others elected from Maharashtra are former Union minister Praful Patel of the NCP, the BJP's Vinay Sahasrabuddhe and Vikas Mahatme, and Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut.

The deadline for withdrawal of nominations for the election to the Rajya Sabha ended this afternoon.

The BJP was in a minority in Rajya Sabha so far. The biennial election will improve the party's tally significantly now.
