Rahul Gandhi to be appearing in a local court in Mumbai on Thursday in connection with a case of defamation files by Rashtiya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker for allegedly linking the organisation with the charge of murder of a journalist Gauri Lankesh. Hearing of the case is scheduled at 10am on 4th July at Mazgaon Metropolitan Magistrate Court. Rahul Gandhi was summoned, along with CPM leader Sitaram Yechury, by a metropolitan magistrate's court in February on the complaint filed by Dhrutiman Joshi, a lawyer and worker of the RSS or Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the ideological mentor of the ruling BJP.
Gauri Lankesh was shot dead outside her house in Bengaluru in 5 September, 2017. In February, RSS filed case against Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Sitaram Yechury and communist party of India. Later, the court had issued summons to Gandhi and Yechury for investigation in connection with the case. Court had dismissed the complaint against Sonia Gandhi and CPI.Rahul Gandhi within 24 hrs of the murder, criticized the RSS and alleged "anybody who speaks against the ideology of the BJP, against the ideology of the RSS is pressured, beaten, attacked and killed," stated Dhrutiman Joshi in the complaint. Joshi has requested court to charge duo under section 499 (defamation) and section 500 (punishment for defamation) under Indian Penal Code (IPC). This is for the second time when petition of defamation is filed against Rahul Gandhi in Maharashtra.
Today in court Rahul Gandhi pleads not guilty for the defamation case, allegedly linking Gauri Lankesh's murder with "BJP-RSS ideology": Rahul has been released on Rs 15000 surety amount. Ex MP Eknath Gaikwad has given surety for Rahul Gandhi.
