Venkaiah Naidu to be NDAs Vice Presidential Candidate? BJP Parliamentary Board to Decide Today

New Delhi : After the completion of election for the next President of India, Bharatiya Janta Party is now putting in all efforts in ensuring a win for its Vice Presidential candidate. The BJP Parliamentary Board is scheduled to meet on Monday afternoon. The meet is likely to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. Among the various names, the name of veteran leader and Union Minister
Venkaiah Naidu
is being considered as frontrunner for the chairmanship of the Rajya Sabha.
The BJP is in a fix to ascertain the candidate which satisfies the eligibility criteria drawn by Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS). The RSS reportedly wants an upper caste candidate from South India which may help the party and the organisation in making inroads into region's politics ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. Apart from Karnataka, the party is still struggling to grab power in rest of the states. Naidu not only conforms to the caste category, his experience makes him the favourite among many senior leaders too.
Naidu held cabinet portfolios in the both governments of National Democratic Front. Naidu's image may also help in dividing the opposition in the upper house of the parliament where BJP is still in minority. The party succeeded in dividing the opposition in the Presidential polls where its candidate Ram Nath Kovind was supported by Janta Dal (United).
However, Naidu himself is not keen to run for the office. Naidu had said, "Never am I going to participate in vice-president elections even if anyone compels me." He had further said he would neither want to become the rashtrapati (president) nor uparashtrapati (vice president) but was happy being Usha's pati(his spouse).
Apart from Naidu, Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj, Veteran leader Kalraj Mishra, former Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal are also in the fray, say reports. The opposition parties announced former West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi as its Vice Presidential candidate earlier this month after long held negotiations.(
